Asian Institute Of Technology
About us

The Language Center (LC) at AIT offers English, French and Thai language courses each semester, and occasionally courses in Chinese and Korean. The LC is located in the Library Building and is open from 8am to 5pm daily. The LC website and the Learning Resource Center (Room 216) contain information on course schedules and offer self-help materials for language learning.

English is the medium of instruction at AIT. The Institute's commitment to academic quality and internationality has led to the requirement that all AIT students attain a minimal level of competence in writing English. Therefore, writing is the primary focus of the tests, courses, tutorials and self-help materials at the Language Center.

All AIT students are required to take the AIT English Placement Test when they first arrive. To pass, students must attain a score of 6.0 on the Placement Test, which is equivalent to 6.0 on the IELTS writing scale or 20 on the new i TOEFL writing tasks .

Students who do not attain a score of 6.0 are required to attend English courses. These courses are offered as scheduled classes during the semester. In addition, Writing Clinics (one-to-one tutorial sessions ) are scheduled by appointment for students with questions or problems related to writing up their assignments or research. (There is no charge for these services.)

Students who want to improve their language and academic skills before they enter AIT may join the AIT Bridging Program , where they study and use English intensively, while reading and writing about topics related to their fields of study and preparing for their first semester's courses.

Come to the LC and visit the Language Resource Center ( LRC ) where you can borrow books, tapes, videos, CDs for self-study of Chinese, English, French, Japanese, and Thai.

French Language courses , on-campus activities, a website, and a library of French materials (books, CDs, videos, and tapes) are made available all year long through support from the French government.

Thai Language courses for AIT students, faculty and staff are offered for a modest fee each semester. Chinese (Mandarin) classes are occasionally offered by popular demand (also for a modest fee).
